Aids And Adaptations

Our Occupational therapy promotes the health and wellbeing of people by providing aids and adaptations so they can continue to live independently at home and lead a more active life. If it is necessary to have your home adapted to enhance your daily life, one of our Occupational Therapists will assess you and identify which adaptations will best meet your needs.

Common aids and adaptations

Many different techniques and equipment can be used as part of our Occupational Therapy, depending on the difficulties an individual is having. Small and large adaptations to the family home can be made in order to aid an individual's abilities to carry out daily activities much more easily examples of which are as follows:

  • Adaptive cutlery - Seating adaptations
  • Splints - Dressing aids
  • Stair lifts - Walking aids
  • Hoists - Grab rails
  • Lever handles - Hand rails
  • Shower chairs - Bath lifts

Our Occupational Therapist will make recommendations carefully for both aids and adaptations as there are many things to consider such as the cost impactions, sizing, impact on other family members etc.

Conditions/difficulties suitable for aids and adaptations

Many individuals with a wide variety of conditions would benefit from our aids and adaptations, examples of some of the conditions are listed below:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • COPD
  • Macular degeneration
  • Parkinson's disease

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Long term conditions
  • Neurological conditions
  • Rheumatic disease

Summary

Aids and adaptations are things which can help individuals in or around the home and assist with independence. Minor adaptations are small items such as lever taps, grab rails and handrails for stairs. While major adaptations are large scale works such as wet rooms, stair lifts ramps for wheelchair uses and adapted kitchens. Our Occupational Therapists will carefully assess the needs of each individual and recommend the most appropriate adaptations.
